There will soon be a new rule regarding an integral part of USDA’s efforts to educate consumers about nutrition. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced recently that it will be making important nutritional information readily available to consumers on 40 of the most popular cuts of meat and poultry products. Under a new rule, packages of ground or chopped meat and poultry will feature nutrition facts panels on their labels. Additionally, whole, raw cuts of meat and poultry will also have nutrition facts panels either on their package labels or available for consumers at the point-of-purchase. The nutrition facts panels will include the number of calories and the grams of total fat and saturated fat a product contains. FSIS does not believe that it has underestimated the costs of the final rule. Since the Supplemental Proposed Rule Regulatory Impact Analysis was done, the total costs of labeling may have even decreased because of more cost-effective technology, such as less expensive computerized flexography and scale-label printers. The additional costs of labeling would be relatively low for the affected businesses. One trade association and the food marketing organization asserted that allowing the use of point-of-purchase materials will reduce the financial burden on retailers and benefit consumers. However, others state that FSIS underestimated the cost of providing nutrition labels on ground and chopped products and believe FSIS did not account for the number of retailers that would have to buy new printer or scale systems at the store level. Read the entire summary here.

On this blog, we focus on scales for weighing produce. However, we also like to consume fresh produce and are always looking for ways to prolong the freshness of our favorite fruits and vegetables. We all like fresh produce, but how can we keep it fresh longer? ”How you store fruits and vegetables will impact how fresh your produce will stay,” says Erin Palinski, RD, a registered dietitian in private practice in northern New Jersey. Below are some food storage tips for common fruits and vegetables from Everyday Health. Click the Everyday Health link to read the entire article.

Apples: At room temperature for up to seven days or refrigerated in a plastic bag if you won’t eat them that quickly.
Bananas: At room temperature, both ripe and unripe.
Grapefruit: At room temperature for one week or refrigerated for up to two or three weeks.
Peaches: At room temperature in a paper bag if unripe; remove from the bag when ripe and eat within a day or two.
Strawberries: Refrigerated for one to three days without washing.
Oranges: At room temperature for a day or two or refrigerated for up to one or two weeks.
Broccoli: Refrigerated for three to five days.
Carrots: Refrigerated, stored in a plastic bag with the green tops cut off.
Iceberg lettuce: Refrigerated in a plastic bag after rinsing and drying.
Tomatoes: At room temperature, out of direct sunlight — they quickly lose their taste if refrigerated.

Another important point mentioned in the article is the following regarding storing your produce in one bowl:

Don’t pile all your fruits and veggies together in one bowl — they can cause each other to spoil. “Keep quick-ripening vegetables away from foods like avocados, cantaloupe, tomatoes, pears, and apricots,” says Palinski. “These items emit ethylene, a gas that can cause nearby vegetables to spoil more quickly.” Most apples also emit this gas.

When it comes to displays for the CAS S2000JR scale, VFD is green digits with black background. LCD is black digits with gray background. Battery power is available with LCD models but is NOT available with VFD models. Max capacities include 15 lb, 30 lb or 60 lb in either VFD or LCD with or without pole.

The overwhelming feature of the S2000JR is the serial interface that easily allows for printing labels with the optional label printer. The label information that is printed is the very basic info, but in a lot of cases, that is all users really need. It is more than likely the most cost effective label printing price computing scale on the market.
