Over the years the Ohaus line of retail price computing scales has been a pretty solid choice for customers looking for a reliable, high quality scale. Of course the predecessor of the Ohaus RE15US and RE30US was the old XRT series scales. And of course before that we had the Tiger II scale. And finally before that it was the 8433 scale. All of those were nice scales that were fairly simple to use and they just worked. In fact, if you look closely, you’ll still see an old 8433 still in action at some small farmers market. Recently, we received word that Ohaus was going to be upgrading their retail scale lineup and replacing the RE and RA series. Below is a summary of the new scale and a link on where to purchase the new scale.

The scales that we usually talk about each month can be referred to as quite a few different names. Some folks call them retail scales while others prefer to say they are scales for computing the price per pound. Others like to say they are calculating scales or certified legal for trade. We generally just call them price computing scales. These products work great at places like fudge shops, candy stores, frozen yogurt stores and farmers markets because the operation of the products is pretty simple.
You basically place the item on the scale, enter the price per pound that you wish to charge your customer, and the scale computes the price per pound on both the front display and the back display. This is great because both the farmer or the candy shop owner can see the price and the customer buying the apples or the cup of butter pecan frozen yogurt can see how much they owe. Speaking of yogurt we also should mention that some of the scales can compute price per ounce which is especially useful for sellers looking to charge patrons by the ounce.

There will soon be a new rule regarding an integral part of USDA’s efforts to educate consumers about nutrition. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced recently that it will be making important nutritional information readily available to consumers on 40 of the most popular cuts of meat and poultry products. Under a new rule, packages of ground or chopped meat and poultry will feature nutrition facts panels on their labels. Additionally, whole, raw cuts of meat and poultry will also have nutrition facts panels either on their package labels or available for consumers at the point-of-purchase. The nutrition facts panels will include the number of calories and the grams of total fat and saturated fat a product contains. FSIS does not believe that it has underestimated the costs of the final rule. Since the Supplemental Proposed Rule Regulatory Impact Analysis was done, the total costs of labeling may have even decreased because of more cost-effective technology, such as less expensive computerized flexography and scale-label printers.
